KATIE DAVIDSON

[Katie, born February 28, 2003, was injured in a tragic vehicle accident near Salmon Arm, BC, on January 7, 2005 that killed her father, the Rev. Kris Davidson, her mother Sheryl, and sister Lauren (9). The family were much-loved members of the Haney congregation -- Kris was ordained and inducted as our minister in March 2004, serving until his death in January 2005. Prior to the accident Katie was under medical care for a pre-existing serious heart condition that had been diagnosed before her first birthday. She is recovering well from her injuries and has been adopted by her mother’s brother’s family in Calgary.]

January 2012 Update

REPORT ON KATIE'S SURGERY: **

Originally Katie was scheduled for a left craniotomy on December 7th, but that was rescheduled for December 12th in at the Children’s hospital. The surgery lasted about seven hours –- longer than planned. The problem had been with the left part of her brain, a result of the injury she suffered almost seven years ago in the car accident. During the surgery they removed the temporal lobe, part of the frontal lobe, and part of the hippo campus –- all on the left side.

Katie had seizures, a result of abnormal electrical activity in her brain. This caused her to have many difficulties with her life, such as concentrating, learning, remembering, and sleeping. A large team of doctors have talked about her for the past couple of years and have done tests to make sure that the operation is the best choice to improve her quality of life.

The right side of the brain is supposed to take over from the left side. We have already seen this to some extent before the operation. Katie is a very strong little girl and met this challenge with her usual quiet courage. She is still our little Katie, no change in her from this surgery. Katie remembers us, talks, plays, and walks. Only time will tell if all of her functions work as they should. We do hope and pray for a positive outcome now that the seizures are gone, to be able to concentrate, learn, and remember better, to give her a better quality of life.

** JANUARY 1, 2012 UPDATE
Katie is still in hospital but came out on a pass yesterday night and she will get another pass for tonight. She had another surgery on Dec. 27 to handle the cerebrospinal fluid and pressure buildup that she was slow to absorb on her own. To facilitate this issue they placed a subdural-peritoneal shunt. That operation went really well and we are happy that it has provided much comfort for her. We are hoping that the main cause for fevers were from the inflammation from surgeries and the pressure from the fluid buildup. In the last couple of days her fevers have been more under control. She is thankfully recovering well and getting more energetic every day.
